A Korean Woman in America

친구들 안영하세요!

The words above are written in Korean and mean "Hello friends". Korean characters are not pictures but alphabetical characters. The characters are combined into syllables of two, three, or four characters

is made up of (ch), (e), and (n) and is pronounced "cheen". You'll soon be speaking Korean . . . NOT!

Korean names begin with the family name so in Korea I'm known as Im Soon E whereas in the U.S. I'm known as Soon E Im. In Korean, Soon E is one word with two syllables.

If you know me, you know that my English is not good enough to write for English-speaking people so I've asked my husband, Ed, to write the English sections of my website. Believe me, after 16 years together, he's qualified.

Our 2002 Korean Trip

In April of 2002, I returned to Korea for the first time since I came to the U.S. in 1990.

Ed and I visited my family and did some sightseeing. For most of our two-week trip, we stayed with my younger sister. We slept on on the floor as she and her family do and ate only Korean food. As is Korean tradition, we sat on the floor for meals.

I had a chance to visit some of my old friends and introduced them to Ed.

When we returned, my mother came with us and stayed for almost two years.
