Through the years

There are very few pictures of me before I came to the United States. My parents never had a camera. Hakkun and I never had a camera. But sometimes a friend or family member would take a picture and give me a copy. Also, once in a while, I'd go to a photo shop and get my picture taken. Those pictures were always in black and white.

The picture to the right is one of the first color pictures of me. It was taken in the summer of 1975 when I was 23 years old. I worked as a seamstress in a factory in Seoul. One of my jobs was to make ski jacket samples.

One of the mechanics who work there was really infatuated with me. He insisted on walking me home after work every day. He begged me to marry him. "Just marry me and come to my place. You don't have to bring anything". In Korea, the bride is expected to supply various items to set up housekeeping, e.g., refrigerator, table linens and bed clothes.

I had no interest in him. He was cute but too small. He had a camera and took this and several other pictures of me. It's one of the few color pictures of me before I was married.
